Please note the following information regarding BCCS Student Health:

  • Be sure to update the health information on Power Schools Enrollment each
year. This information is an important way for us to keep up to date on current
student health concerns and emergency contact information. Please notify the school as soon as possible if any of the information changes during the school year.
  • Please provide a copy of your child’s most recent annual physical.
  • If your child has a chronic health condition such as asthma, severe food allergies, diabetes, we will be contacting you to establish a school health plan. Please complete the Asthma Action Plan or Food Allergy Action Plan if needed.
  • If your student will require medication during the school day (either regularly scheduled or as needed) please complete the enclosed Authorization to Administer Medication Form. All medications need to be provided to the school by parents. Medication must be in the original labeled container, preferably unopened. Remember that all medications require both a physician and parent/guardian signature before medication can be administered to students.
  • Students will be screened for vision and hearing in kindergarten, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 6th grades.Remember that school screenings are designed to identify children with vision or hearing concerns that have gone undetected by family and friends. If you have concerns regarding your child’s hearing or vision, please consult with a physician for a complete exam. If we feel your child needs a referral based on our screening findings, we will send home a letter, please follow up so we can make note of it and alert the teacher.

Please review your child’s immunization record and assure that they have the
necessary vaccinations prior to the start of the school year. All 6th grade students age 11 or older must have proof of Tdap and meningococcal vaccines at the start of the school year.

General Issues to be aware of:

Illness:

Keep your child home if they have a temp above 100.4° F for 24 hours until it is
resolved WITHOUT the use of medication. Also keep your child home if they have
vomiting or diarrhea and let them rest until they no longer have those symptoms for 24 hours. Keep in mind, the nurse cannot diagnose your child. We can let you know when they seem to not feel well enough to be in school and/or when they are unable to learn due to feeling ill. Please do not send your child to school to see the nurse to determine if your child is ill.

Accidents/Injury:

You might get a call from us if your child had an accident or injury on the playground. You will not get a call each time a child has an injury if it is not severe. If your child is seriously injured, we will make every effort to reach you or an emergency contact that you have listed with the school. For this reason, it is important you keep your child’s contact information up to date so we are able to reach somebody when needed.

Lice:

We do not send children home if found with nits or live lice. We advise that you check your child’s head occasionally as a preventative measure. Lice are spread by close head to head contact, lice crawl they do not hop or fly. Making sure to follow the proper procedures is imperative in preventing transmission and re-infestation and I can assist you with that if needed.

Cold Weather:

Please send in warm outdoor gear for the colder weather. We do have children go out to recess in the winter. For those children who have asthma, we recommend a face mask or scarf that is worn around the mouth to warm the air they breathe during the cold months. We do not keep children indoors unless there is a note from their health care provider, or imminent weather conditions.

Extra Clothing:

We advise that you bring in an extra set of clothing for your child in the event that they have an accident, such as milk spills, or get wet or muddy on the playground, etc. This is required for all kindergarteners. This does not have to be a uniform, any clean change of clothing is acceptable.

~ Looking forward to a happy, healthy school year! Please call with your questions or concerns.
